Ratna Śāstra Tradition

Classical Jyotiṣa integrates gemstones as one of the remedial measures (upāya), alongside mantra, yantra, dāna, and worship.

Lesson #1: Navaratna

A classical mapping of planets to gems is preserved in Ratna‑śāstra:

  • Sun → Ruby
  • Moon → Pearl
  • Mars → Red Coral
  • Mercury → Emerald
  • Jupiter → Yellow Sapphire
  • Venus → Diamond
  • Saturn → Blue Sapphire
  • Rāhu → Hessonite
  • Ketu → Cat’s Eye

Ratnaśāstra—the traditional Indian science of gemstones—occupies a unique position at the intersection of Jyotiṣa (astrology), Āyurveda (medicine), Śilpaśāstra (craftsmanship), and Tantric metaphysics. Far from being a peripheral curiosity, Ratnaśāstra forms a systematic body of knowledge that integrates cosmology, mineralogy, ritual purity, and remedial practice. Its classical expositions appear in texts ranging from Varāhamihira’s Bṛhat Saṁhitā to specialized treatises such as Parāśara’s Ratna‑parīkṣā and Rudrakavi’s Ratna‑samucchaya.

The Sanskrit term ratna (gem, jewel) is etymologically linked to the root √rā (“to give, to bestow”), indicating its role as a bestower of auspiciousness, vitality, and planetary harmony.

Lesson #2: Garuḍa Purāṇa

Hindu Believes

The earliest references to gemstones appear in the Vedas and Purāṇas. The Atharva Veda mentions gems as carriers of protective and healing energies. The Garuḍa Purāṇa (Ratna‑parīkṣā section) provides one of the earliest systematic classifications.

रत्नानि शुभदानि स्युः पापघ्नानि विशेषतः ।
येषां स्मरणमात्रेण भवेत् पुण्यप्रवृद्धिता ॥
ratnāni śubhadāni syuḥ pāpaghnāni viśeṣataḥ ।
yeṣāṃ smaraṇamātreṇa bhavet puṇyapravṛddhitā ॥

Gems are givers of auspiciousness and destroyers of misfortune and sins.
ratnāni jewels, precious things
śubhadāni bestowing auspiciousness, bringing good fortune
syuḥ are, may be
pāpaghnaṃ destroying sin, removing negativity
viśeṣataḥ especially, particularly

This Purāṇic foundation later crystallized into the technical discipline of Ratnaśāstra. However it created a debate about anukūla and pratikūla as (a) anukūla group advises gemstones only for temporal benevolent graha whereas (b) pratikūla advise gems for strengthening graha and removing their malevolent nature
